Hello, I am really glad to see such a beautiful website about taulava samaaja.
I also wanted to mention that my family name isn’t mentioned above. Please add in “Beedu”. And secondly, the website is very beautifully designed, but in the tool bar above, English is wrongly typed as Englesh. A change is required out there.
Thanks.

I had a glance of the shivalli family names published in your website. Thanks. Very useful and also came up well. I noticed, our family name, shivalli Brahmins, Tulu speaking – KUNIKULLAYA – predominantly from Kasaragod Taluk, formerly a part of Dakshina Kannada Dist. ( now in Kerala state) did not find a place in your list. May I request you to please include it in the list at your earliest.
Further, family names of the following to be correctly spelt as :
KADAMBALITHAYA
PUNICHITHAYA
Family name of YERKADITHAYA did not find a place in your list, which my be noted.
This is my humble suggestion.

I love the work done in this website… But it would be even better if it is possible to create a family tree for each family name…
Like great great great grandfather–>great great grandfather–>….–>father–>you…
It can be designed where the viewers can update their family details in the page…
But for that it would be better to create an user account first…

Isn’t Rao a recognized family name?
January 6th, 2009 at %I:%M %p
I don’t think names like Rao, Bhat, Acharya, Tantri/ Thantr, iAsranna are the recognised family names.
As an example Persons who does Pooja at Temples are re-surnamed as Asranna.
Hope I am right.

A very good site indeed giving details of Shivalli brahmin community. It was really amazing to such a large number of family names in the community. I would like to know from knowledgeable members whether Nekkar is the short from of family name Nekkantaraya.
January 22nd, 2009 at %I:%M %p
In my opinion, Ayya is not a family name(open to corrections). The word is used as a mark of respect when addressing “Dhanigalu”(landowners). Thus Ayya got affixed to the names of persons at the end eg. Krishnayya, Raghunathayya, Narasayya etc. Later on, the family name was introduced like Nekkar – short form of Nekkantaraya with its origin in a hamlet called Perampalli, near Manipal in Udupi District. The full name of a person began with Perampalli and ended with Rao. For instance, Perampalli Nekkar so and so Rao. From the above it can be concluded that Rao is also not a family name. In all probability, Rao originated from Raya. Thus Ramaraya became Rama Rao and Venkatraya became Venkat Rao. The origin of Raya can be traced back to Vijayanagara King Krishnadevaraya.

Dear Mr. Ranjith
Thanks for doing good work. Hope many people joinind. I have obseved people asking for the family tree details. But it will be difficult unless concerned people taking interest and submitting. Like Mr. Sripathi B.S doing the Kedilaya family tree. I Also heard Some Baipaditaya also tried for that. Please also clarify the some family names similar in Koota and Shivalli. Like Adiga, Aithala etc. But have clarified Adiga (shivalli)
because of the Devara Adidavarege Pooja maduvavaru (Clarified by Vidvan Punichitaya). We are Kekunnaya.
Thanks and regards

Dear Mr. Ravikiran,
Sri Vishnumoorthy of “Kodangala” ahead of Alevoor is “Kuladevatha” for Saralayas. It is not Moodu Alevooru Vishnumoorthy, but Kodangala, also known as “Puli Devasthana” probably has its origin in Sage “Pulinda.” This temple is the “Kuladevatha” of three Kulas i.e. Kadamballitthaya, Manjitthaya and Saralaya. Unfortunately I am not sure whether ALL Saralayas worship this as their Kuladevatha, but I have seen many Saralayas believing this to be their family deity. The Paddana of our panjurli daiva also has some references of this fact.
By the by, I am Kadamballitthaya.

Namaskara,
I am Ganesan and my gotharam is Vishwamithra gothram. My fathers’ name is Krishnan and has one elder brother and one younger sister. My grand fathers’ name is Vishnu and he was working as Revenue Inspector in Udupi, Murudeshwar and Sirsi. My grand mothers’ name is Kalyani. Both of them are no more. My grand father died around 1936-37.
I want to know about the relatives on my grand fathers’ side (may be in Karnataka (or) in Kerala) in order to find out my “KULA THEVARU”. Since, I don’t Know the Kulathevaru, I am worshipping Vishnu/ Tirupati Venkatachalapathy Perumal as my Kulathevaru.
Please let me know about my Kulathevaru and the place where it is situated.
I hope you will help me in this matter.
Expecting a positive response

Hi,
Its really good website, with lots of information which we do not know, and I especially got to know about the Surnames.
Can you please add more information on pooja veedhana & hacharane and about few festivals celebrated by Shivalli brahmins.
Thanks ,
Murali M Achar.
March 16th, 2009 at %I:%M %p
Dear Mr. Ganesan,
It is near impossible to know about your “Kuladevaru” from the details you have given. One option would be know your grand father’s surname (not the acquired surnames like Rao, Bhat etc, but one from the list above) and ask the people about “Kuldevata” of that family or show your gf’s horoscope to a learned jyothishi and learn the “Kuladevata”. If you keep searching like this, you may be fooled by some people also.

This is a very good effort made by you, to gather all informations about Shivalli Brahmins .
Shivalli Brahmins originally rooted in different places of South Kanara. The speciality of Shivalli Brahmins is thier mother tongue – TULU. Shivalli brahmins are , if you go back to your family history , can find out that they are either Purothiths, Archaka’s of Temples, and Teachers ( Acharyas) in Gurukulas.
Each Shivalli family has got their own Kuladevaru. Some have even their own Kula Devasthana. I belong to PARLATHAYA FAMILY and our root is near RamaKunja, Puttur Raluk. We have our Kuladevasthana , near Ramakunja Grama, a place called Kondappade. and our Kuladevaru – Sri Anantha Padmanabha. the temple is well known as KONDAPPADE ANANTHA PADMANABHA TEMPLE.
Lot of research has been done in our PARLATHAYA FAMILY TREE AND ITS HISTORY by one of our family memebr SRI K. BALAKRISHNA ACHAR, a retired teacher who has won National Award for Best Teacher. We , Parlathayas , gathered together about 14 years back and formed an association whcih is now called as ‘PARLATHAYA PRATHISHTANA’ .
March 25th, 2009 at %I:%M %p
And we meet every year on May 1 st . this year our Sneha Samavesha will be held at Bhagamandala, Madikeri dist. on 2nd may 2009. ( due to election it will be held on 2 nd , instead of 1 st. May) Shri Anantha Bhat and sons, the Kshethra Purohith of Bhagamandala is hosting this Samavesha.
The Parlathaya Prathishtana was formed with 2 objectives. One, to renovate our Kula Devasthana. This has been done on two phases, during the year 2002 and 2006. Further development is ongoing. Second, to gather all the Parlathayas scattered all over India and abroad. So far we have been able to collect details of more than 500 members ( including direct and connected members. ) We have published a directory – HELLO PARLATHAYA- containing address/telephone/e-mail details of our family members and its still getting updated.
Regarding the Kula Namas given in this website, some names are repeated with different spellings as they are differently pronounced, but are one and the same. for eg. Elachithaya /Yelachithaya. Names like Adiga, Bhat, Rao, Achar, Tantri are not Kula Namas but they denote one’s profession.
I wish all the best to the hosts of this Website.

Hi,
I am also interested in knowing our Kuladevatha. We are the Madambadithaya basically of Sorake (Puttur taluk) origin. Regarding our family name I am not too sure if it is pronounced as Madambadithaya or Mudambadithaya or Moodambadithaya? Could somebody clarify on this? I use Madambadithaya in my name. Even in Madambadithaya I heard that there are of two gothras one is Vishvamitra and another one is Bhargava. We are of Vishvamitra gothra.
I also request all the Shivalli brahmins to please use their family names. We should be proud to use our family names. If we do not make it now our younger generations will not be knowing their family names.
I realized this and hence I use my family name in all the places wherever required. I was known as Sumanth Rao M in school records but these days I prefer to use Sumanth Madambadithaya (in email signatures, letters etc). May be our parents or grand parents did not want to use such long family names to their children’s name hence would have shortened it by just adding the initials (like M in my case for Madambadithaya). Hence would have used surnames like Rao, Bhat etc. It is time to change now and start using the family names.
Thanks
Sumanth Madambadithaya

Hi,
Thanks for good, exhaustive and all the hard word done. Let me add few information. My father is from Kodavoor and the name is Rayasa Kodavoor Balakrishna Rao. As I heard from my grand parents, Vijayanagara Emperor, Krishnadevaraya (basically a “tulu” Arasa or King) preferred Shivalli Brahmins for the day to day running of the kings’ court and kingdom’s affairs. Shivalli Tulu Brahmins were employed in the court for various positions like finance, Revenue, Tax etc., One particular group with sir name “RAYASA” were exclusively serving the affairs related to neighbouring provinces & kingdoms (like external affairs). For this purpose, Krishnadevaraya, had given “Umbali’ s like farm lands, cattle and fleet of horses etc.,

It was heart warming to know about the site dedicated to Shivalli brahmins. I am presently employed in one of the defense forces of India. Being away from home in remote places and away from the cultural practices, I had presumed that ours was a dying culture until I came across this site. I also would want to add that there exists another family name not included in the list. Its my family name : PAJITHAYA

Please add ” MURUDITHAYA ” IN THE LIST OF SIRNAMES. THESE FAMILIES ARE AVAILABLE FROM NORTH OF UDUPI UPTO THE SOUTH OF MANGALORE DISTRICT. FAMOUS SCHOLARS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE ARE HAILING FROM THESE FAMILIES. THESE FAMILIES ARE FOUND IN BAREPPADI, PUTTURU, UJIRE,AROUND DHARMASTHALA, MANGALORE, PADUBIDRI, NANDIKURU, UDUPI, MANIPALA AND SO MANY OTHER PLACES. MURUID’s GROUP OF HOTELS AND OTHER BUSINESS HOUSES ARE PLENTY IN CHENNAI.
GOTHRA IS ANGEERASA. DESCENDANT GOTHRAS OF ANGEERASA ARE FOUND AMONG MARADITHAYA AND MARDILLAYA. THE ORIGIN OF THESE MARADITHAYA, MURUIDITHAYA, MARDILLAYA, MURADITHAYA IS FROM ” MARUDITHAYA “, AS MENTIONED IN SKANDA PURAANA. KORNAYA, BANNINJATHAYA, MARUDITHAYA AND SHIVATHAYA ARE THE FOUR FAMILIES WHO WERE THE GURIKARAAS AMONG SHIVALLI COMMUNITY. THE TRADITION CAN BE SEEN (EXCEPT BANNINJATHAYA) – IN PADUBIDRI GRAAMA. MURUDITHAYAs THINK THAT THEY ARE HAVING KULADEVAS IN DIFFERENT PLACES. BUT THE ONLY TEMPLE WHICH HAS SOME TRACEABLE PROOF IS ALEVOORU VISHNUMURTHY AS FAMILY DIETY AND PERAMPALLI MAHALINGESHWARA AS TANTRIC DIETY. JYOTHISHA IS INHERITED PROFESSION AND TANTRA IS AWARDED (BY THE KING) PROFESSION OF MURUDITHAYAS.

The list in this site contains so many Sirnames which are neither basic nor branch sirnames. For e.g., Adiga, Ayya, Beedu, Ballal, Basuri, chikkaraya, dhanya, kinni etc. These are either profession related or personality related. However these people may not be knowing their basic sirnames since their forefathers have not passed on the same to next generation. It is advisable to everybody, to jot down whatever they know and make it available to their next generation. At least, a person can collect information about his ancestors, families with same sirname in other places, so that any descendents in future, if interested, can investigate and bring the unknown facts to light.
Another information … Any person who is not at all knowing about his kuladevata… may go to Perampalli (Shivalli) and pray there. It is the place for all. If any higher plane is required one can go to Ahichhatra of Northern Panchala, near Ramnagar Village of Anola Tehsil in Bareilly of UP – which the route of all Brahmins of Coastal except for origins of matti village near Kapu.
Friends … feed me whatever you have in your knowledge.. so that I can pass on to my son.

is said to be conducted on 02-03-2010. Kodi will be descended on 03-03-2010. Unique
opportunity to have whole festival on single day. Sri Narasing Rao, care taker in the temple
informed that food and shelter shall be made available. There are buses plying between
Udupi city B/s to the temple. I feel, it is a finite place for all those who do not know

Excellent! A few remarks based on the above. I am an Udupa from Kunjoor, near Paniyur. As mentioned here above by somebody, the Kundanthayas are very much there in Kunjoor. It is mentioned as Kumdanthaya in the list.
Also the Shivalli brahmins were invited by Kings of Kerala as Purohits there and many of them went there. We will find them throughout Kerala. There is a high concentration of Shivally Brahmins in Tripunithura near Kochi, and in Thiruvananthapuram, both being the capital of two kingdoms Cochin and Travancore, those days.
The Shivalli brahmins came to be known as either Embranthiry or Potty(or Poti as mentioned above by somebody). Is it appropriate to add these names to the list?

Hello Brothers / sisters and friends,
The Brahmakalasha of Shivalli (perampalli) Temple is being conducted shortly. Shivalli
is the place for all shivalli brahmins where they were initially brought and kept by mayoora verma and later distributed between 32 villages (dwaathrimshat gramaas). Hence it is our place. The function is our function and any contribution towards the said punyakaarya certainly rewards punya. If you are willing to contribute, here is the detail:-
The temple has opened one A/c for the purpose, with corporation bank, Perampalli Branch.
The details are:-
Name :- “Shri Shivalli Shri Mahalingeshwara Mahaganapathi Devasthana (R) Brahmakalashothsava Samithi”
FTS No. CORP0002094
A/c No. SB01001212
Amount can either be directly credited to A/c or transferred online or cheque, DD can be drawn in favour of the above said name and sent to Shri Narasing Rao, Mahalingeshwara Mahaganapathi Temple, Perampalli, Udupi.
Best wishes to all.

Since we settled in Hubli (Karnataka) the children were supposed to have their surname in school. Ancestors being worshipper of Lord Shiva with One Eye, we were called OKKANAYA which ulimately we are with the surname OKADE.

Dear All,
To promoto Shivailli Brahmins culture its a great website. But all the things told in the website about culture is great…no doubts every rule has an exception – mudambadithaya’s of bhargava gotra based out of kanchana…who boast so much of tulu culture but damn it cheat girls abroad, liars, and dump girls…..the great person is shreesha mudambadithaya..
I have nothing to do but beware of such cheaters..i wud say not all are bad but there are some like this. Even before we talk of culture and roots of the family we should be better informed of being good humans !!!

August 30th, 2010 at %I:%M %p
As Sri Vedavyasa Acharya pointed out, the surname “Okade” is missing. But as Mr. Rajaram Okade pointed out, Okade and Okunnayya are being used interchangeably.
I am Ramesh, and my grandfather is from badaNediyoor near Udupi. We are “Bhat”s but were given the honorific “Potti” when my grandfather moved to Trivandrum. Our Kuladevathe is Inna Muddanna (Shiva) and Mundkur Durga Parameshwari. We are Yajurvedis.
My mother’s side are Shivallis from Mattu Graama settled in Trivandrum for a few generations.
Mrs. Shobana Upadhya, I have heard that the Inna/Mundkur temples are the Moola Kula Devasthanas for all Bhargava Gotra Shivallis from South Kanara. It must be your family’s as well.
I had a query for Bhargava Shivalli Yajurvedis here – what is our Veda Shaakha? Do we belong to Krishna or Shukla yajurveda? I believe we are Bodhayana Sutra as well, as that is how I was taught. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks,
Ramesh
