Dear Ms. Vidya.
First, it is our custom that we get the family name of our father.
Second, you are a girl, and when you get married, your name gets your husband’s family name.
This is your custom and why you need to change it now ? ( after all, Rao is not a original family name in Shivalli community. And in my case, I belong to Parlathaya family. Rao has come by error.)

I wonder how ‘adapunnaya’ came as family name as ‘adapuna’ means ‘ploughing’ is not allowed as a profession in brahmins!

I am Suhaas Madhyastha belonging to the Vishwamitra Gothra. We worship Mahisha Mardhini as our Kuladevaru and we visit the temple in Neelavara (Near Brahmavara) to offer our prayers once in a year. Hope this information helps the community.

I am happy to know that you want to learn tulu rituals and possibly the language too, at least for the sake of your beloved. Good luck to you.
Further, there is no ritual to convert from one caste to another. Jaati or caste (not varna) is solely decided by birth. However, there is one possibility, don’t know if scholars will agree, you may be adopted as daughter by any willing brahmin parents, and they in turn can give you in marriage to your lover.

You must be joking! Tulu or any language for that matter cannot be learnt from website! You must interact with people speaking that language. Mangaluru is not a bad place for learning brahmin tulu. There is quite a population of shivalli tulu brahmins in that town, speaking pure brahmin tulu. You should find out.
