It is one of the best things that I have ever seen in our community, where we can go through these resources as very few people are aware of, in the present situation, about Shivalli Brahmin’s history and culture.

My humble suggestion would be to look beyond the boundaries of Karnataka and patch up with the Shivalli communities of the other states as well, like UMBS (Udupi Madhwa Brahmana Sabha) in Kerala and also if we should join the force in developing the own script our language, TULU.

Out of curiousity, was just thinking about how would you be managing to get things working, I mean financially.

Anyways Kudos to the site owners and moderators. Keep up the good work.

    All the very best !!!

    Dear Moderator,

In the year 1984-86 I worked under the Dynamic leadership of Shri.A.R.Kalluraya native of Mangalore(Vice President KBL Karad , Maharastra ). Now I came to know from your web that the name Kalluraya belongs to Shivalli Brahmin community.

Hence he may be member of your shivalli Brahmin group.Kindly circulate this message and If you got his mail Id , kindly provide me the same since I have lost all communication link of this wonderful person who gave me a wonderful chance to start my official carrier in 1984.

    advance thanks

  12. ramu

    Namaskaragalu,
Actually I wanted to know what could be the differences between Shivalli Brahmins and Madhwa brahmins?

    Waiting for rerply…

  13. Balachandra

    @ Sri Ramu,
“Shivalli” is a classification based on geographical consideration. Brahmins who originated from Shivalli village or Udupi are called Shivalli brahmins. Their main dialect is Tulu.
“Madhwa” is a classification based on faith. Brahmins who accept tattvavada philosophy or dwaita which was revived and propagated by Madhwacharya, are called Madhwa Brahmins. Further we have Shivalli Madhwa Brahmins, Deshastha Madhwa Brahmins, etc. They speak Tulu, Kannada, Konkani, Marathi, Telugu, etc depending on their place of origin.

  14. Prasad

As I understand we Shivalli Brahmins were Shudras and later converted by Brahmana Deeksha given by Madhwacharya.

  15. Balachandra

    @ Sri Prasad

Wrong ! Please read “The tale of tuluva brahmins” under the “History” tab in this website. It gives all the details. Shivalli brahmins were there much before Sri Madhwacharya’s time.

    :-)

  16. Raghu Saralaya

Prasad is surely not a shivalli madhwa brahmin and I dont want to name his community as we all can guess from which community he is.Also this is foolish futile attempt to blacken the image of shivalli brahmins. All of us know the fact that as Balachandra has stated that shivalli brahmins were present much before Sri Madhwacharya’s time.Sri madhwacharya himslef was a shivalli tulu brahmin. We also very well know that who were given brahmana deekshe and who got converted and not able to digest the fact that srimadacharya is from tulu lineage. This is undisputed and will never change.

  17. Prasad

    Dear Balachandra,
See the outlook and phisique of most of our people. We are well built and strong.I dont think there is something wrong which I wrote.

  18. Krishna Rao

I have one feedback (rather suggestion) to our own community.
As I have observed in many functions, our people have less courtesy to non-shivalli guests who come to the function especially during lunch/dinner. Our people (mainly close relatives of the host) rush to the lunch venue and occupy seats without even bothering about the guests who are outsiders. This is happening in most of our functions where the food is served by others ( outsourced service). Further the serving starts even before the commemoration of the function. I have seen in one of pooja, the food serving has started even before Mangalarati.
I think we should take care of the above issues.

  19. Rajaram

Our girls who are working( secially those in IT) off late started marrying boys from other community. If this continues, there is a threat to our tradition.

  20. Ramesh

I think there is some truth behind what Prasad says. I was told that our sirnames ( like Saralaya,Kekunnaya etc) represent the profession which we were doing before the deeksha.

  21. Balachandra Achar

    Prasad, Rajaram

Please read the authentic history of Shivalli brahmins published in this same website. If at all the present shivalli brahmins were converted from other castes, that must have happened many many thousands of years back. It is immaterial and not a issue now.

Definitely we were NOT converted to brahmin caste “during the time of Madhwacharyaru” which is only 800 years back. Of course, during Acharya’s time many Shivallis converted from Advaita to Dvaita philosophy, but that is a different issue altogether. Nevertheless, there is mention of Sri Vadirajaru giving Madhwa-Vaishnava deekshe to some non-brahmins.

@Prasad, please get your basic history knowledge corrected before jumping to comment.

  22. Balachandra Achar

    @ Krishna Rao

That is a general tendency of humans, especially in our country. I have seen this happening in other communities too.

  23. John

This is just a dummy comment!

  24. D Anathayya

I am proud to be a shivalli madhwa brahmin after seeing the achievements of our people in all fields. I feel we are the most successful class of brahmins among dakshina kannada and Udupi dists compared to other sects from the twin districts.

  28. Padmanabhan Potti.L

Shivalli tulu brahmins are linguistic minorities. We have to develop our mother tongue. Always we
should speak in Tulu Language at least in our house. In Kerala, Tamilnadu,Andhra,Karnataka our
peoples are speaking in the languages where they are living. The people concerned may please take
    suitable action.

sir I have got doubt, While perfroming nitya pooja , Tulasi is known as Vishnu Patni and is given equal importance right? another question is while we do pooja “tulasi pooja” is done after the pooja of Vayudevaru..Why is this ? Iam not getting the exact priciples to be followed?and why this tulasi pooja is to be performed after Vayu pooja , ? it has to be performed with Devaru right?

Please clarify my doubt/// it is my sincere request//// waiting for ur replies

    contact me at ramutn.tn@gmail.com

  32. Balachandra

    @ Mr. Ramu,

Are you referring to Tulasi (plant) pooja?
There are 3 layers present here. (1) The plant itself has a jeeva (soul); (2) then we have sannidhana of tulasi devi – the abhimani devata of tulasi – in the plant; (3) further we have lakshmi devi’s avesha in tulasi devi.
In the taaratamya krama, tulasi devi comes below vayu devaru.

  33. Dinakar Rao

The site is updated for long.

  34. Girish Rao

It would be great if our traditional cooking recipies are published in this site. Our satvik udupi style should be preserved for future generations.

  35. Shraddha Madapulithaya

I too agree with Girish Rao.

  36. PLN Prasad oppanthaya

presently, many shivalli brahmins wilfully omit the ‘Kulanama’ or surname,by wich d next generation forget d original kula to wich they belong and one can not decide who is who,by which varnasankara grows.all of us need to take note of this.i expect a solution/remedy from our activists.(email-prp1050@gmail.com

  37. Shraddha Madapulithaya

@ Prasad Oppanthaya, We have strange ‘Kulanamas’ like mine and yours. Can you explain how these names (surnames) generated!

  38. Prasad

In home page of this site, the picture under ‘matrimony’ could be changed as the bride and grooms costume are not Shivalli Traditional style.

  39. PLN Prasad oppanthaya

In response to ms.Shraddha madapulithaya, some kulanamas seem to be strange, but I guess, during the classification of vamshas, period they gave some identification names relevent to their status/places/duties etc and their forefathers original places are linked in some names.Mine,as they found in research, related to “Methodist”means, guiding authoritatively in times of need,as I guess. All are based on nearest clues.Yours may be dwellers near tamarind growing area, which I am not sure, please.

  40. Prasad

@ PLN P Oppanthaya, these surnames are not widely found in families of Shivalli Brahmins of Udupi origin. Those who hail from remote villages possess these surnames and they indeed sound strange and due to which some people hesitate to keep along with their name.

  41. PLN Prasad oppanthaya

Shivalli brahmins are scattered in Udupi,Dakshina kannada and Kasargod dists. Some kulanamas are famous but not spread allover, some are not found now due to ending of the vamsha.I got records dating back to 905 AD in my family kulanama, but not widely found.Hesitation to add kulanama means hesitation to honour parents/pithru varga. All must feel proud to say their kulanama,if it is sounding good or not.I hope everyone agree this viewpoint.
