Shivalli brahmins are scattered in Udupi,Dakshina kannada and Kasargod dists. Some kulanamas are famous but not spread allover, some are not found now due to ending of the vamsha.I got records dating back to 905 AD in my family kulanama, but not widely found.Hesitation to add kulanama means hesitation to honour parents/pithru varga. All must feel proud to say their kulanama,if it is sounding good or not.I hope everyone agree this viewpoint.

@ PLN P Oppanthaya, these surnames are not widely found in families of Shivalli Brahmins of Udupi origin. Those who hail from remote villages possess these surnames and they indeed sound strange and due to which some people hesitate to keep along with their name.

In response to ms.Shraddha madapulithaya, some kulanamas seem to be strange, but I guess, during the classification of vamshas, period they gave some identification names relevent to their status/places/duties etc and their forefathers original places are linked in some names.Mine,as they found in research, related to "Methodist"means, guiding authoritatively in times of need,as I guess. All are based on nearest clues.Yours may be dwellers near tamarind growing area, which I am not sure, please.

In home page of this site, the picture under 'matrimony' could be changed as the bride and grooms costume are not Shivalli Traditional style.

presently, many shivalli brahmins wilfully omit the 'Kulanama' or surname,by wich d next generation forget d original kula to wich they belong and one can not decide who is who,by which varnasankara grows.all of us need to take note of this.i expect a solution/remedy from our activists.(email-prp1050@gmail.com

@ Mr. Ramu,

Are you referring to Tulasi (plant) pooja?
There are 3 layers present here. (1) The plant itself has a jeeva (soul); (2) then we have sannidhana of tulasi devi - the abhimani devata of tulasi - in the plant; (3) further we have lakshmi devi's avesha in tulasi devi.
In the taaratamya krama, tulasi devi comes below vayu devaru.
