Shri Mahalingeshwara
Shri Mahalingeshwara

Inna Muddanu is another beautiful Shiva temple on the banks of River Shambhavi in Tulu Nadu.  The main deity of this temple is Sri Mahalingeshwara. As found in almost every other temple in Tulu Nadu, there is also a Ganapathi idol here towards the South West corner of the temple.

History:

According to the legend of the place, the great sage Bhargava performed penance of Lord Shiva at a nearby hill. Pleased with the penance, Lord Shiva blessed Bhargava and granted a boon that he would come down and stay in the form of a Linga nearby. That is how the Inna temple came into being. Even today, Inna Mahalingeshwara (along with Sri Durga Parameshwari of nearby Mundkur, also established by Sage Bhargava) is the Kula Devata for a majority of families from the Bhargava Gotra in Tulu Nadu.

This place has a recorded history of more than 1300 years. The garbha gudi and theertha mantapa are built in typical Dakshina Kannada temple style. The main Bhuta worshipped in the temple is Varahi (Panjurli). The temple was recently renovated in 2006 and is in excellent condition. Temple is also surrounded by well maintained – beautiful garden.

Location: Inna Muddanu, Udupi District.

Main deities: Mahalingeshwara, Ganapati

Bhutas: Panjurli

Address: Inna Muddanu Sri Mahalingeshwara Devasthana,

  2. As per the historians including Dr P Gururaja Bhat Inna Muddannu Temple has an history of nearly 700 years. It was constructed after Yellur Mahothobhara Vishwanatha Temple, which has got a history of around 800 years.

There were eight Brahmin familes of Bhargava Gothra located in Mundkur Maagane. Inna comes under Mundkur Maagane.Even today places named after these Brahmins can be seen in Mundkur Maagane specially surrounding Inna Village. Only For these Brahmins of Byhargava Gothra Mugeraya,Madmannaya,Okuda,Mithinthaya… Inna Mahalingeshwara is the Grama Devatha and not Kula Devatha. Mundkur Durgaparameshwari Temple is the Kuladevatha for all brahmins hailing from Bhargava Gothra. Even Vidwan Inna Krishnachar and Yellur Keshava Bhat have said this. Even in the Suprabhatha written and dedicated to Inna Muddannu Mahalingeshwara by Inna Krishnachar
this issue has been expressed saying Muddannu Mahalingeshwara has occupied the place where Durgaparameshwari temple is located in Mundkur Magane.

  3. As per the historians including Dr P Gururaja Bhat Inna Muddannu Temple has an history of nearly 700 years. It was constructed after Yellur Mahothobhara Vishwanatha Temple, which has got a history of around 800 years. It is said that as the southern portion of Yellur temple was in the Inna village limit of Mundkur Maagane and as a settlement Kunthala(Kuthyaru) Raja allowed the Astakula Brahmins to have their Eshwara temple in Inna as Mundkur had Sri Durga Temple which was older than 700 years prior to Yellur Temple.

Inna comes under Mundkur Maagane.Even today places named after these Brahmins can be seen in Mundkur Maagane specially surrounding Inna Village. Only For these Brahmins of Byhargava Gothra -(Kachithaya,Kunjithaya,Vailaya, Mallanjinayaka, Mugeraya,Madmannaya,Okuda, and Mithinthaya) Inna Mahalingeshwara is the Grama Devatha and not Kula Devatha. Mundkur Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple is the Kuladevatha for all brahmins hailing from Bhargava Gothra. Even Vidwan Inna Krishnachar and Yellur Keshava Bhat have said this. Even in the Suprabhatha written and dedicated to Inna Muddannu Mahalingeshwara by Inna Krishnachar this issue has been expressed saying Muddannu Mahalingeshwara has occupied the place where Durgaparameshwari temple is located in Mundkur Magane (Stanza 28) based on the prayer from the Brahmins of Astakula Brahmins. The locals are misleading devotees saying they have to visit Muddannu before visiting Mundkur and so on. In no way Inna Muddannu Mahalingeshwara temple is connected to Other Bhargava Gothra brahmins except the eight families mentioned above and it is the misconception created in the minds of devotees of Bhargava Gothra.

  4. The Location and ambiance, look is very good. I was told the connection of Bhargava Trust has been the reason behind these developments. Maintenance is exellant. The credit goes to the Governing body and the trustees of Bhargava Trust. It is worth if all the temples in south kanara district implement the maintenance concept of neat and clean as seen in Inna Muddannu Temple . I was shocked to know that the trust is running the show with accumulated losses. Being in a remote rural area the Trust’s effort is really appreciable even with a loss for a genuine cause.

  5. Nice photos

Every year I is to visit this temple.

Temple is very nice and maintained properly.

Gardens are also maintained properly. It is worth if all the temples adopt the maintenance concept of neat and clean as seen in Inna temple
