Human beings are a blessed race. We have been blessed with a rare faculty to get inspired and rise to greater life. But more blessed are those who timelessly endeavour for the betterment of fellow beings. Professor Shankaranarayana Mudambadithaya, as a teacher, and educationalist, a thinker, an administrator and above all as a human being has been an inspirer par excellence. His life is a vast ocean of experience. The deeper we delve the more precious will be the pearl of lessons for life we can conquer. I have made an honest effort to present the life sketch of my Acharta Shri G.S. Mudambadithaya on the basis of association with him as a student taught by him for seven years in Veda Vijnana Gurukulam, Chennenahalli, Bangalore.

PARENTS AND CHILDHOOD:

Professor G.S. Mudambadithaya was born on 23rd March 1935 to Shree Narayana Mudambadithaya and Srimathi Netravati. His early childhood days were spent in his native Ganadamoole, in Bajathur village, Dakshina Kannada District, Karnatraka.

Born in a pious Hindu family, spiritual orientation was there in him right from his birth. His father was a social and political leader of the village. He was a good administrator too. Recounting his childhood impressions about his father the professor said “my father would get angry soon. But at the same time he would calm down quickly.” Unfortunately, Prof. Mudambadithaya lost his mother while he was in his third standard in the school. But he has this to say about his mother”Though I don’t have any memory of my childhood experiences with my mother, I have heard from my relatives that she was a wonderful human being. “With his four brothers he enjoyed his childhood and primary education in and around the sylvan surroundings of Bajathur nourished by the holy river Netravati. “To go to school we had to traverse a 10 KM forest track daily and a stretch of 3 KM was infested with wild animals. Though it was tough, we enjoyed it” This is how he summed up his early schooling experiences.

HIGH SCHOOL,COLLEGE AND HIGHER EDUCATION:

Professor Mudambadithaya finished his high school education staying in a hostel at Purrur and he had his college education in Mangalore. He did his B.A. in humanities in the year 1957 from Government First Grade College, Mangalore in the year 1958 he took B.Ed from Government Training College, Mangalore, affiliated to Madras University College. Education brought out the best qualities in him and exposed him to various experiences which helped him to face the world with courage and fortitude. The fact that, during his college days, he as secretary of the Social Activities wing successfully organized the Social League Day single handed when many collegues who earlier promised to co-operate backed out, shows that he was never averse to face adverse situations and emerge victorious. He did his post graduation in Economics from Benares Hindu University in the year 1964. Further he did his M.Ed, from Karnataka University, Dharwad, getting second rank in the year 1968. He also did his M.A. in English from the same Uoniversity in the year 1972. “I was indead lucky right from the beginning to have teachers and lecturers who along with teaching their respective subjects implanted in us abiding values of life. They were the scupltors who shaped my personality” Exclaimed Professor Mudambadithaya witha sense of gratitude.

BEGINNING OF HIS ACADEMIC CAREER:

Prof Mudambadithaya began his career as a secondary school teacher of English Oriental High School in Ramakunja, Dakshina Kannada District in the year 1958. He joined Government Service in the year 1960 in Government High School, Kikeri, later he is served in various parts of Karnataka including Mandy, Mysore, Gulbarga and Tumkur until 1968.

TRAINING IN ENGLAND:

As a teacher in English he underwent training in the Regional Institute of English during the year 1967. Then the director of the institute Mr. Gani, who later became the Vice Chancellor of Calicut University, asked him to apply for Government Scholarship to attend a Diploma course in English training in England. Professor Mudambadithaya applied. But due to bueracratic problems the scholarship was not awarded to him. But he was permitted to go England. So he had to spend for the course from his own pocket which was a bit costly. “My father gave a considerable amount selling some property. It lessened the burden on me to a great extent” recalled the Professor reflecting upon his father’s role in his going to England. He left for England during September 1968. He joined the course for English teaching conducted by the department of Education of the Exciter University England. Apart taking part in English language training programme he also attended various lectures organised by the university. He could say “I got a lot insight into English literature from these lectutes’. He competed the diploma and was requested by the officials to work in the Common Wealth Institute in London. Professor Mudambadithaya accepted the offer and worked for 6 months in the Institute. He returned to India in December 1970 having gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in English language teaching.

IN THE REGIONAL INSTITUTE OF ENGLISH:

On the basis of his excellent performance in England officials in the Regional Institute of Egnlish offered to have him as their faculty. Professor Mudambadithaya joined the Institute and served for seven years until 1977 for improving the standard of English Education. Later he was promoted as a Class I officer, and he served as Principal of various junior colleges in Karnataka until 1980.

He again returned to theh Regional Institute of English for a three year stint as a professor until 1983.

He started the academic wing of the PU board and conducted various teacher training programmes and inspired the teachers to set high standards in teaching and guide the students to become responsible citizens of our country.

RETIRED BUT NOT TIRED:

Various state level and National level Committies and Councils set up by the state and Central Governments, recognising his experience and resouncefulness invited him to be a resource person and provide guidence, Professor Mudambadithaya was a member of various such councils. National council for Teacher Education (since june 2004), NCERT, State syllabus Committee, Karnataka State Secondary Educational Board (1999-2003). In the year 1989 he became the presidient of the Karnataka chapter of Vidya Bharathi an umbrells organisation of about 18,000 Educational Institutions of various levels working to infuse eternal Indian Cultural Values in the present Westernized Educational set-up. Under his guidance many Vidya Vikas Shibiras’ have been organised under the suspicious of Vidya Bharathi to give orientation to teachers from all over Karnataka on value Education and Indian Cultural Ethos. Professor Mudambadithaya is also actively associated with the Gurukulas in Karnataka since 1994. He regularly visits three Gurukulams, viz Maitheyi, Prabhodhini and Vedavijnana Gurukula to conduct training programmes in English teaching and communicational skills to the Acharyas and Mathrushees of the Gurukulas.

CONCLUTION:

‘The life that wins its aims asks for greater aims’ – Savitri’ Aurobindo

Professor Shankara Narayana Mudambadithaya in his distinguished career as an academician has made valuable contributions to the field of Education. He has initiated innumerable number of persons into the art of teaching. His thoughts, ideas and concerns as an educationalist are well received. He has reached a point in his life from where he can look back and have a sense of fulfilment. But this is foreign to his nature. Even today he constantly moves among the newer teacher student community instilling eternal values that would make then better individuals. Let us pray to the almighty to keep aglow and add lusture to this beacon light to spead the radience of wisdom far and wide for long years to come.

Perseverance, ambition, hard work coupled with proper guidance from Teachers (Gurus), parental support and encouragement from the School faculty play a vital role in bringing out the talents in children and Krishna Pawan Kumar G.N., a student of standard X of the St. Aloysius English medium school is a standing example of the same. Of course, Krishna Pawan Kumar is a genuine child prodigy.

Born on the Sixth of March 1992, Krishna Pawan Kumar is the only son of Smt. Geetha & Shri. Naresh Kumar Mudambadithaya. Mast. Krishna Pawan Kumar got his initial lessons in Carnatic classical music by none other than his grand mother Vidushi. Smt. U. Satyavathi. When he was just 8 , the family members decided that Krishna Pawan Kumar should also learn the art of playing Mridangam ( His father is an amateur mridangist). They put him under the tutelage of Vidwan Shri. K.H. Ravikumar, AIR Mangalore staff artist, to learn the art of playing the Mridangam. In the following year, Krishna Pawan Kumar’s family members decided to put him under the tutelage of Vidwan Shri. Gopalakrishna Iyer N, formerly, the Principal of Kalanikethana School of Music and Dance, Mangalore to learn the art of playing Flute. It did not take much time for the talented Krishna Pawan to learn the art of playing Flute and within the first year itself, at the tender age of 10, the Sangeetha Parishad of Mangalore gave him an opportunity to give a concert for 30 minutes. From then onwards, Krishna Pawan Kumar has been scaling greater & greater heights with time. It was his grand mother who realized that her grandson’s exceptional ability to grasp the finer intricacies of Carnatic music and put him under the tutelage of Vidushi. Smt. Rajarajeshwari Bhat Madanthyar to fine tune his Vocal chords. Vidushi. Smt. Rajarajeshwari Bhat Madanthyar at present, is teaching Carnatic music in the US.

Having learnt all the three art forms studiously and with all seriousness, for the last six to seven years, Krishna Pawan Kumar, has passed the Senior Grade examination conducted by the Karnataka Secondary Education and Examination Board in Mridangam in distinction class and stood first in the State. He has also passed the Junior Grade in Vocal and Flute in distinction class and is preparing for the Senior grade examination in both the forms simultaneously this year.

He has made his Gurus, School and the family members proud by winning several laurels at the District State and National level competitions and that too in all the three art forms. He is the recipient of the State Government Scholarships for learning Flute as well as Mridangam. Following is the list of some of the Prizes won by Krishna Pawan Kumar at the State / National level

1) Bala Prathibha 2005 in Flute conducted by the Dept. of Kannada & Culture

2) Prathibha Karanji 2006 in Flute conducted by the Dept. of Education3)

4) Naada Kishorotsava 2007 in Flute concert conducted by Nada Brhama Sangeetha Sabha, Mysore

5) National level vocal music competition “Manodharma” section conducted by Raga Dhana Udupi.

Krishna Pawan Kumar starting giving Flute concerts at the tender age of Ten and has since then given more than fifty concerts at various prestigious Sabhas like the Sangeetha parishad Mangalore, Shasthreeya Sangeetha Sabha Karkala, “Yuva Dwani” Mysore, Nada Brahma Sangeetha Sabha, Mysore, Shanmukananda Sabha Mumbai, Dr. Mani Krishna Swamy memorial trust, Mangalore, Raaga Dhana Udupi etc. and has also given programs in AIR Mangalore. Eminent musicologists have praised Krishna Pawan Kumar for the professional style of rendering Flute concerts and have appreciated the clarity, Classicism, purity of Tone and a good command over laya or the rhythm in his presentation, may it be the Vilambha kala Krithis or Madhyama kala krithis. He has won great accolades during his Flute concerts. These musicologists have no doubt that Mast. Krishna Pawan Kumar is going to the artist of the future.

He started accompanying artistes on the Mridangam since he was eleven and has so far accompanied artistes on more than thirty occasions. Musicologists have appreciated his style of playing Mridangam, his following technique and the command he enjoys over the laya.

Krishna Pawan Kumar

He has also given Vocal concerts in the recent past and the musicologists have expressed that this child prodigy is competing with himself for establishing superiority over Vocal singing, playing Flute and playing the Mridangam. There were occasions when Krishna Pawan Kumar had come out with flying colours when he had to compete along with the Seniors and in some cases along with Hindustani Instrumental music competition. He has composed music to a few Keerthanas of Shree Vadiraja which one may be spellbound on listening.

Having achieved a decent level of command over these three art forms of Carnatic Music, awards and titles have come in search of Mast. Krishna Pawan Kumar G.N. Following are some of the major awards / Titles received by him.

All these awards and titles have not come easily to Krishna Pawan Kumar. He is attends to music classes regularly, and also has regular sessions of practices at home. Of course, his parents and grand parents, join him during his practice sessions having mock concert and probably that has made him flourish as an artiste. With all these activities, Krishna Pawan Kumar is good at studies too. His School Principal Rev. Fr. Ivan Rodrigues, and other Teachers are very proud of him and have always been a source of encouragement to him. The Principal readily permits him to skip classes in view of his activities may it be rendering concerts or participating in any competitions. The Principal acknowledges that Krishna Pawan Kumar is a meritorious, studious and more than anything a good student of the school.

Pundur Venkatraja Puninchathaya, belongs to the famous Pundooru family known for scholarship, cultural interest, social work and philonthropy. Son of poet and freedom fighter Laxminarayana Puninchathaya, Venkatraja grew in a rich tradition and later became a worthy successor to it.

P V learnt Kannada, Sanskrit alsong with mother tongue Tulu at home. A disciplined and hardworking person, he did his school and Vidwan in Sanskrit in quick succession. Later he did his M A in Kannada and M A in Sanskrit, besides a degree in Hindi. He became a teacher and later continued his vocation at the Swamiji’s High School Edneer , sponsored and managed by Sri Edneer Mutt, a famous cultural centre of Kasargod. Puninchathaya remained a close confidant of both the Swamijis – Ishwarananda Bharati and the present pontiff Keshavanada Bharati, both encouraging him in his scholarly persuits. He taught Kannada and Sanskrit at Swamiji’s school, besides disseminating knowledge to many who came to him. He is an untiring teacher, a real Guru dedicated to spread of knowledge.

Puninchathaya conducted extensive research in Tulu language, Tulu script, Sanskrit manuscripts, Folklore and other related subjects. His main contributions to the filed are – discovering the epics in old Tulu language – Kaveri, Sri Bhagawatho, Mahabharatho and his research on Tulu script. He proved that Tulu has a quite a long history of written literature and Tulu script was actually being used for Tulu language, and the present Malayalam script is actually originated from Tulu script.

Puninchathaya is good Arthadhari in Yakshagana. He limited his interest in Yakshagana to his native place and to the Edneer Mutt. His presentation is fine and characterisation is mature. He is known for his ‘female roles’ in Talamaddale. He has also composed some prasangas inlcuding Sri Shankara Vijaya, on the life of Sri Shankaracharya.

Sri Puninchathaya has been honoured with many awards such as the National Award for Teachers, Tulu Akademy Award, Kerala and Karnataka State Awards and many more – all deservedly. Sri Puninchathaya has published collection of poems, translations, articles, besides his Tulu classics and research papers. He is being consulted by people from far and wide, including foreign students and scholars. He is always ready to help all seeking knowledge and guidance. He has done his research on his own, by real interest without much of institutional funding or government support. He is a real ‘Vidhwan’.

A very simple, friendly, low profile, dignified and mature person, a real scholar and a real teacher – P Venkatraja Puninchathaya fully deserves the Muliya Thimmappayya Award given to him this year for his services in literature. (The award instituted in the name of the great scholar writer teacher Muliya Thimmappayya, considered to be one of the leaders of Kannada renaissance).

– M Prabhakara Joshy

The post P Venkatraja Puninchathaya first appeared on Shivalli Brahmins.
