The family houses of Shivalli Brahmins had a direct bearing on these 32 villages. Family names of Shivalli Brahmins itself is a fantastic story. The Shivalli Brahmins community which lived in a compact geographical area measuring 100 k.m. width and 120 k.m. length, had more than 500 family names to it’s credit – is nothing but amazing. Perhaps, a small community like this may not have such a diversified order of family houses in the whole world. Most of the family names have direct relationship with their respective names of their geographical location.
Here we have listed almost all Shivalli family names. Please let us know if we have missed any family name or there is a mistake. This list has been taken from “Kula-Gotra-Pravara-Sootra-Shakha Soochi” book written by Shri B. S. Okunnaya and published by Bollimbala Okunnaya Prathishtana.

Hi,
Thanks for good, exhaustive and all the hard word done. Let me add few information. My father is from Kodavoor and the name is Rayasa Kodavoor Balakrishna Rao. As I heard from my grand parents, Vijayanagara Emperor, Krishnadevaraya (basically a “tulu” Arasa or King) preferred Shivalli Brahmins for the day to day running of the kings’ court and kingdom’s affairs. Shivalli Tulu Brahmins were employed in the court for various positions like finance, Revenue, Tax etc., One particular group with sir name “RAYASA” were exclusively serving the affairs related to neighbouring provinces & kingdoms (like external affairs). For this purpose, Krishnadevaraya, had given “Umbali’ s like farm lands, cattle and fleet of horses etc.,

It was heart warming to know about the site dedicated to Shivalli brahmins. I am presently employed in one of the defense forces of India. Being away from home in remote places and away from the cultural practices, I had presumed that ours was a dying culture until I came across this site. I also would want to add that there exists another family name not included in the list. Its my family name : PAJITHAYA

Please add ” MURUDITHAYA ” IN THE LIST OF SIRNAMES. THESE FAMILIES ARE AVAILABLE FROM NORTH OF UDUPI UPTO THE SOUTH OF MANGALORE DISTRICT. FAMOUS SCHOLARS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE ARE HAILING FROM THESE FAMILIES. THESE FAMILIES ARE FOUND IN BAREPPADI, PUTTURU, UJIRE,AROUND DHARMASTHALA, MANGALORE, PADUBIDRI, NANDIKURU, UDUPI, MANIPALA AND SO MANY OTHER PLACES. MURUID’s GROUP OF HOTELS AND OTHER BUSINESS HOUSES ARE PLENTY IN CHENNAI.
GOTHRA IS ANGEERASA. DESCENDANT GOTHRAS OF ANGEERASA ARE FOUND AMONG MARADITHAYA AND MARDILLAYA. THE ORIGIN OF THESE MARADITHAYA, MURUIDITHAYA, MARDILLAYA, MURADITHAYA IS FROM ” MARUDITHAYA “, AS MENTIONED IN SKANDA PURAANA. KORNAYA, BANNINJATHAYA, MARUDITHAYA AND SHIVATHAYA ARE THE FOUR FAMILIES WHO WERE THE GURIKARAAS AMONG SHIVALLI COMMUNITY. THE TRADITION CAN BE SEEN (EXCEPT BANNINJATHAYA) – IN PADUBIDRI GRAAMA. MURUDITHAYAs THINK THAT THEY ARE HAVING KULADEVAS IN DIFFERENT PLACES. BUT THE ONLY TEMPLE WHICH HAS SOME TRACEABLE PROOF IS ALEVOORU VISHNUMURTHY AS FAMILY DIETY AND PERAMPALLI MAHALINGESHWARA AS TANTRIC DIETY. JYOTHISHA IS INHERITED PROFESSION AND TANTRA IS AWARDED (BY THE KING) PROFESSION OF MURUDITHAYAS.

Hi,
G8 job, it really good to see.
Please do add Rao as Surname, we are from Kidiyoor, Udupi Near Ambalpady.
I like to know more about aggithaya family.
Great Informative portal. Have a great success. It ss the best platoform to bring all Shivalli community people together. Unity is mighter than sowrd!!
We should fight for to be declared as Minority community to avail Govt benefits. We have been neglected for so many years
Nice to see this one, we all should be united to achive our requirements
hello,
am glad to see such a beautiful website about our community… thank you all.
The list in this site contains so many Sirnames which are neither basic nor branch sirnames. For e.g., Adiga, Ayya, Beedu, Ballal, Basuri, chikkaraya, dhanya, kinni etc. These are either profession related or personality related. However these people may not be knowing their basic sirnames since their forefathers have not passed on the same to next generation. It is advisable to everybody, to jot down whatever they know and make it available to their next generation. At least, a person can collect information about his ancestors, families with same sirname in other places, so that any descendents in future, if interested, can investigate and bring the unknown facts to light.
Another information … Any person who is not at all knowing about his kuladevata… may go to Perampalli (Shivalli) and pray there. It is the place for all. If any higher plane is required one can go to Ahichhatra of Northern Panchala, near Ramnagar Village of Anola Tehsil in Bareilly of UP – which the route of all Brahmins of Coastal except for origins of matti village near Kapu.
Friends … feed me whatever you have in your knowledge.. so that I can pass on to my son.
“Das” Surname belongs to Shivalli Madhwas?
One of the surnames is misplaced Its Manjithaya not Manjathaya
Hi,
This website is really a good one. It took me back to my place for some time. Can any one tells me exact “KULADEVARU” for my below said details. We are really confused. I also did spoke to “Subramaya Swamiji”. But he told me to contact in Krishna Matta to get the clarity:
Kula NAme: KANNARAYA
Gothra: ANGIRASA
Heartening to see the site. Good work. Could you kindly help redefining the respective familiy trees?
Regards
Muraleekrishnan ( Udthye Kedilaya)
Better to treat “Kula” and family names separately. This could help tracing the roots.
Murali
Great work !!. Can u please add the sir name UPADHYA( NOT Upadhyaya) . Our family is basically from Kadiyali udupi.
Gothra : Vishwamitra

Hello Brothers and sisters,
Happy news for u. one day Kodi and Utsav of Shivalli (pErampalli) MahAlingEshwara temple
is said to be conducted on 02-03-2010. Kodi will be descended on 03-03-2010. Unique
opportunity to have whole festival on single day. Sri Narasing Rao, care taker in the temple
informed that food and shelter shall be made available. There are buses plying between
Udupi city B/s to the temple. I feel, it is a finite place for all those who do not know
the “KULA DEVARU”. For further details, contact 09343060077 or 0820-2529670 – Narasing Rao.
Excellent! A few remarks based on the above. I am an Udupa from Kunjoor, near Paniyur. As mentioned here above by somebody, the Kundanthayas are very much there in Kunjoor. It is mentioned as Kumdanthaya in the list.
Also the Shivalli brahmins were invited by Kings of Kerala as Purohits there and many of them went there. We will find them throughout Kerala. There is a high concentration of Shivally Brahmins in Tripunithura near Kochi, and in Thiruvananthapuram, both being the capital of two kingdoms Cochin and Travancore, those days.
The Shivalli brahmins came to be known as either Embranthiry or Potty(or Poti as mentioned above by somebody). Is it appropriate to add these names to the list?

Hi,
It is amazing collection of surnames and information of Shivalli Brahmins. May I know any Ballullaya’s settled in Pune/Mumbai?
Hello Brothers / sisters and friends,
The Brahmakalasha of Shivalli (perampalli) Temple is being conducted shortly. Shivalli
is the place for all shivalli brahmins where they were initially brought and kept by mayoora verma and later distributed between 32 villages (dwaathrimshat gramaas). Hence it is our place. The function is our function and any contribution towards the said punyakaarya certainly rewards punya. If you are willing to contribute, here is the detail:-
The temple has opened one A/c for the purpose, with corporation bank, Perampalli Branch.
The details are:-
Name :- “Shri Shivalli Shri Mahalingeshwara Mahaganapathi Devasthana (R) Brahmakalashothsava Samithi”
FTS No. CORP0002094
A/c No. SB01001212
Amount can either be directly credited to A/c or transferred online or cheque, DD can be drawn in favour of the above said name and sent to Shri Narasing Rao, Mahalingeshwara Mahaganapathi Temple, Perampalli, Udupi.
Best wishes to all.

Dear All,
To promoto Shivailli Brahmins culture its a great website. But all the things told in the website about culture is great…no doubts every rule has an exception – mudambadithaya’s of bhargava gotra based out of kanchana…who boast so much of tulu culture but damn it cheat girls abroad, liars, and dump girls…..the great person is shreesha mudambadithaya..
I have nothing to do but beware of such cheaters..i wud say not all are bad but there are some like this. Even before we talk of culture and roots of the family we should be better informed of being good humans !!!

Dear SIrs,
You are doing a great job.As I am in Tamilnadu, I am in great difficulty of understanding our culture and the traditions followed by our elders. Your site helped me much more in understanding which I could not get in many years.Great contribution indeed. I am from Barithaya family and Angirasa Gothra. If any of the elders could guide me on the Kula Devaru I will be very greatful.
