The family houses of Shivalli Brahmins had a direct bearing on these 32 villages. Family names of Shivalli Brahmins itself is a fantastic story. The Shivalli Brahmins community which lived in a compact geographical area measuring 100 k.m. width and 120 k.m. length, had more than 500 family names to it’s credit – is nothing but amazing. Perhaps, a small community like this may not have such a diversified order of family houses in the whole world. Most of the family names have direct relationship with their respective names of their geographical location.
Here we have listed almost all Shivalli family names. Please let us know if we have missed any family name or there is a mistake. This list has been taken from “Kula-Gotra-Pravara-Sootra-Shakha Soochi” book written by Shri B. S. Okunnaya and published by Bollimbala Okunnaya Prathishtana.

Hi al…
Thanks for this information. It helped me a lot because i wanted to know a lot about this.
Actually i am planning to marry a person who is a shivalli tulu brahmin. I am a telgite based from andhra. His parents are very stringent about cast. Is there any way i can convert into the same cast as his? If there are any rituals and there is anything more, am ready for all that.
Please share the information if anybody knows about it.
Thanks,
Divya reddy
I belong to Adhikari Family from Matti . But I see that the surname is not included .
I would like to learn Shivalli Brahmin Tulu . Can you suggest the web site from where I can learn the same . Since I was brought up in Mangalore I mix up both Shivalli Brahmin Tulu & the local Tulu
Shubha ji,
You must be joking! Tulu or any language for that matter cannot be learnt from website! You must interact with people speaking that language. Mangaluru is not a bad place for learning brahmin tulu. There is quite a population of shivalli tulu brahmins in that town, speaking pure brahmin tulu. You should find out.
Divya Reddy ji
I am happy to know that you want to learn tulu rituals and possibly the language too, at least for the sake of your beloved. Good luck to you.
Further, there is no ritual to convert from one caste to another. Jaati or caste (not varna) is solely decided by birth. However, there is one possibility, don’t know if scholars will agree, you may be adopted as daughter by any willing brahmin parents, and they in turn can give you in marriage to your lover.
Hi,
I want to know the Kuladevaru for Vasishta gothiram . Some one please help me.

Which are the daivas for noorithaya family?
dear sir,
iam col k p hebbar great grand son pf K NARAYANA HEBBAR, WHO retired as Chief engineer PWD, Madras Presidency, HAD HELPED IN CONSTRUCTING ‘udyavara ghanapathi temple’
can any of you pl let me know about MY ‘KULA DEVARU’ PL
THANKYOU
I am Suhaas Madhyastha belonging to the Vishwamitra Gothra. We worship Mahisha Mardhini as our Kuladevaru and we visit the temple in Neelavara (Near Brahmavara) to offer our prayers once in a year. Hope this information helps the community.
My father is from Kota Brahmin (Holla) family and my mother is Shivalli (Rao). Can I keep Rao as my surname?
I wonder how ‘adapunnaya’ came as family name as ‘adapuna’ means ‘ploughing’ is not allowed as a profession in brahmins!
Dear Ms. Vidya.
First, it is our custom that we get the family name of our father.
Second, you are a girl, and when you get married, your name gets your husband’s family name.
This is your custom and why you need to change it now ? ( after all, Rao is not a original family name in Shivalli community. And in my case, I belong to Parlathaya family. Rao has come by error.)
with best regards
Ravi Raj Rao

Gotra: Angirasa
Pravara: Angirasa Ambarisha Yuvanashva
I do not think that your kula dictates your gotra
Hello, Our ancestors were originally from (Kodavoor) Padamanoor, our gothra is angirasa. Our family name is Kekunaya. Could any body help us with our Kuludevaru and Devi.
The Kuladevatha for Kashyapa Gothra (All surnames, I am told) is Shri Aadhi Janardhana, Shimanthooru. I am sure about Shimanthuraya and Shibarooraya (I belong to Shibarooraya descent).
Good Work,
I am from Madumannayya Family,
Our grand father has settled in KERALA
My father in his name he used as EMBRAN in Kerala
But My name is only having initials of Father
i also appreciate the presentation of the temples and photos
also.
At present I am working with a PSU in Mumbai.
Harikrishna Murudithaya – can you explain what is tantric diety? You say that Perampalli is tantric diety and Alevooru Pulinda Vishnumurthy is kuladevaru….please elaborate on these temples too.
Can anybody explain the difference between the surnames ‘Acharya’ and ‘Achar’!
Dear Mr. Vasudev,
I dont think there is any difference between ACHARYA and ACHAR. It is one and the same. Acharya is the original sanskrit word, and I believe it is a professional name derived by serving in Mutts ( like Pracharya) . I believe it is because of teaching vedas, shasthras etc. Later due to the english effect , it has become Achar. Again, please note that, Achar is not a Kulanama of shivalli Brahmins, it only denotes the family connections to some of the Mutts.
Hi,
I am 19 years old and from Wai in Maharshtra, our family speaks Marathi. But there is a story in our family that we were originally Tuluva Shivalli from a place near Udupi.
Although we are now after 6 generations accepted as equal to other Marathi Brahmins like Deshastha and Karada, originally we were not treated at par with them. Like the Chitpavans we also have had to struggle a lot.
Our Gotra is Kashyapa – Ashwalayanasutra – Rug Shakalashakha. We do not follow Madhva but are Smartha – perhaps because our original patrons were the influential Karada Brahmin – Patwardhana family of Rajapur.
I want to find my Shivally roots in Udupi – I dont know ehere to start ? I have heard that there is a Karada Brahmin community in DK / Kasaragode. I am not sure if they are the same as Karada of Maharashtra. I hope thjat they might have a clue as one of them sponsored my ancestor’s migration to Rajapur / Wai.
Any help welcome,
I want to know the Kuladevaru for Vasishta gothiram . Some one please help me.

Hello everyone….
I want to know the kuladevaru as well as the mutt among the ashta matha’s of Udupi. I hail from the Rao family of Kalmadi. I would be grateful to u if u let me know the answers to my questions.

Excellent job. Quite informative and interesting too !!! Congratulations for the efforts and achievement. Now I would like to provide some inputs about my Family name (Pelattaya).

Gotra – Vishwamitra ; Pravara – Dhananjaya ; Kuladevaru – Mahishamardhini Devi Neelavara (Kundapura) ; Matha – Palimaru
Kindly include the above in the next Update of the List. Thanks.

Gurumoorthy R Shibaraya
@ Shri Gurumoorthy R Shibaraya: “Shibarooraya” and “Shibaraya” are the same. It is at Sl.No.500 of the list. Some of them (like me) are using “Acharya”.
Shri Sudhir Acharya: Then add Shibaraya to that like- Shibaraya\shibarooraya. If you go shibaroor every body use only shibaraya. So please add that.
We are Bhagavata of Kashyapa gotra but here they didnt given kashayapa gotra for Bhagavata please update kindly
The Village in which Shibaraya family settled is called Shibaroor and not the other way round. Some of the family branches which left shibaroor long time ago had lost touch with the main branch incorrectly used the name shibarooraya while admitting their children to schools ( as they were not differentiating between shibaroor ans shibaraya) and this has led to a name Shibarooraya coming into usage. The Gotra is Kashyapa. I would like add that in the main branch there had recurring problem of no male successor and almost every second genration had to go for adoption for continuing the family lineage resulting very limited contact by the main family with other branches. Thus usage of alternate/ modified Surnames like Shibarooraya, Acharya etc. come into vogue. The main line still resides in Shibaroor and continues have the family name shibaraya and also the heredetory trusteeship of Kodamanthaya temple.
thanks
