The family houses of Shivalli Brahmins had a direct bearing on these 32 villages. Family names of Shivalli Brahmins itself is a fantastic story. The Shivalli Brahmins community which lived in a compact geographical area measuring 100 k.m. width and 120 k.m. length, had more than 500 family names to it’s credit – is nothing but amazing. Perhaps, a small community like this may not have such a diversified order of family houses in the whole world. Most of the family names have direct relationship with their respective names of their geographical location.
Here we have listed almost all Shivalli family names. Please let us know if we have missed any family name or there is a mistake. This list has been taken from “Kula-Gotra-Pravara-Sootra-Shakha Soochi” book written by Shri B. S. Okunnaya and published by Bollimbala Okunnaya Prathishtana.

There was a News paper item published in Udayavani daily some time back that for the people of Bharadhwaja Gotra Yenne Krishna Of Udupi Krishna Temple is the Kuladevaru. How is the Kuladevatha decided? Is it by Gotra or by Family? Please clarify.
Thanks and regards.
ACHADA HAYAVADANA PURANIK,
BANGALORE.
Can any one Please Inform me Kuladevaru for Kashyapa Gotra, Someone Told its Shimantoor Adi janardana but Kashyapa is dont have Bedha in Pravara is it possible to decide the Kuladevru from Gotra itself? Then for all brahmins of kashyapa should have the same kuladevaru how to differentiate?
@Raghavendra Bhagavath,as you wrote there are few gothras which beleive certain God/Goddess as their diety. Here Kashyapa gothra to which I belong came to know that Seemanthur Adi Janardana is my “Gothra Devaru” and not kuladevaru. They both are different. My kuladevaru is sri Durga Parameshwari and Seemanthur Janardana is “Gothra devaru”.So you pls try to know which is your Kuladevaru.Regards.
WOW !! This is a great site with enormous details!! Thanks a lot!
We belong to the Manjithaya family and we were told that our Kuladevaru is KODANGALA SHRI. VISHNUMOORTHI.
From the information given by Shri Achada Hayavadana Puranik, it is clear that PURANIK is not a Kula Nama , but it is a Surname , Like Rao, Bhat, Achar.
From the message of Shree PLN Prasad Oppanthaya, I got a new information that there is a “Gothra Devaru” other than Kula Devaru. If this is true, then most of the Shivalli Brahmins know only their “Gothra Devaru” and , but, not their “Kula Devaru” .

Hi
Am from Bharadwaja gothra, one and all just wanted to clarified about kuladevaru and gothradevraru, my recommendation is better all the seniors of family get together and perform astamangala prashna so that we will be clarified if you all agree upon this, I will organize the event and all of the family present in this event will have to share the charges incurred at actuals., and i will personally take care of the activities.. Pls mail me back at abhibhat@rediffmail.com
Upadhyaya is not a original family name of shivalli brahmins, it is a “birudu” given by ‘RAJAS’ for the extraordinary performance in ‘vedapatana’ (Expertise in vedas) and Upadhyaya is being used by different families irrespective of their original surname.
My original surname is “Polnaya”. My great great grandfather got Upadhyaya birudu from VITTLA (near Puttur) raja, so , then onwards our family is using that surname. And even i know some families who use ‘Upadhyaya’ but their original surname is different.
So, it is not possible to have a unique gotra , sootra for Upadhyaya. So please remove it from list ( if only everybody agrees with it).
Sir, Tantry it is not in the list.
I would like to know about full details about tantry, like kuladevatha pravara, shakha, mutt etc,
regards,
m.r.tantry

Hi all…,
i stumbled upon this site while searching for some clue on our kuladevaru. I’m told recently by one of my uncles that we are “Manjithaya.” At that time, i didn’t take it too seriously because we were told by a couple of astrologers that “angirasa gotra” kuladevaru is “Alevoor Vishnumurthy” but now in this site i found Manjithaya family’s kuladevaru is “Kodangala Vishnumurthy.” it is time to trace back the origin as we were called acharyas once and now bhagavaths.., God help us. Any Manjithaya who is knowledgeable enough about “Manjithaya” can you help me please. Which is our gurumutt.., etc.., Can call me on 09482717318

I am trying to find out the local origin of Mithyantha — may someone help me in providing information….
Thanks
Hi to all
The Kuladevaru (family diety) of all Shivalli Brahmin families of Aangeerasa and Harithasa gothra is SRI VISHNUMURTHY. The 1500 old holy keshethra is at Sri Vishnumurthy Devasthana, Muda Alevoor Village, Udupi District – 574 118, Phone 0820-2592224. But for Saralaya, Manjethaya and Kadambalithaya families Kuladevaru is SRI VISHNUMURTHY of Sri Vishnumurthy Devasthana, Padu Alevoor, Udupi District (very close to Muda Alevoor).
As per few family source Kuladevatu is SRI DURGE, correctness not known.
But understood from few experts that the Bhagavatha Sampradaya followers perform panchayathana pooja paddathi by worshiping Vishu (Akasha/Space), Eshwara (kShiti/Earth), Adithya (Vayu/Air), Ganesha (Jala/Water) and Ambika (Vahni/Fire).
Can someone help me getting the clear picture of Kuladevata and our proper pooja paddathi. Hope worshiping Durga/Ambika as kuladevaru is also because of panchayathana paddathi.
I belongs to Kedilaya family of Aaangeerasa Gothra, Aangeerasa Ambareesha Youvanashwa Pravara, Ashwalayana Suthra, Ruk Shakha.
I am in the process of generating Kedilaya Family Genealogy.
My father has bestowed on me a huge self respect for Shivalli as a community. A strong sense of fraternity evolves each time i meet a fellow shivalli. I am glad i chanced upon this site. Frankly ” Sandhya vandan” was a rote learned routine since the last 32 years till i came about the true meanings & their inter relationship in this site.
:-Kashyape gotra, Ashvalayana sootra. Chekketaya as our family name. I am confused about the Pravara ( i keep chanting….Vratsanadi!! . I guess it is mispronounced. somebody help me with it please.), Polali Rajarajeshwari as our kula devi.
Fraternal greetings to one & all.

Can any one provide me the details about guru mutt.
Details:
Gotra Angirasa Ambarisa pravara
Maradithaya kula.
Arooru Vishnumurthy Kula devaru.
What will be the guru mutt for our family?
Hi
pls let me know the Gramam and Grama Devaru also Guru matt of Puthuraya Family.
Kula devaru is Alevoor Vishnumoorthi.
I happened to visit this site in my search of our lineage. At the outset I would like to thank the creators of this site for taking pain to catalog our great sect.
Now coming to the point, I am Hebbar, Vishwamitra Gothra, Ashwalayana Sutra, Kula Devi Shri Neelavara Mahishasura Mardini Devi. It was revealed during Astamangala that my ancestors had migrated from Neelavara around 800 years ago, where they were located at Hebbar Bettu and had a Mutt called Hebbar Muta. The Mutt housed Vigrahas of Ganesha, Durga Parameswari and other gods. My ancestors had taken a Panchaloha idol of Durga Parameswari Devi with them. They settled at Heranjal village, near Kambadakone, Byndoor and installed the idol in the village temple. The goddess is worshiped till today as the village deity.
The above list does not include my surname. Kindly clarify whether I am Shivalli Brahmin. If yes then kindly include my surname.
Secondly I request all to kindly share any knowledge about my lineage. Thank You
Very interesting. If all shivalli brahmins contribute like this, we will have a lot of information about our origin and also about our ancestors.
I belong to Vailaya Family, Bhargava Gotra, Pancharsheya Pravara( Bhargava, Chyavana, Aupluvaan, Ourwa and Jamadagni), Ashwalayana Sutra, Rugvedis. As far as I know, there were five Vailaya Family in D K and surrounding Districts. Karaya near Uppinangady was the centre. We are from Hithalpady-near Guttigar(Sullia) but no one is staying there now, Adoor Vailaya’s – Sullia and Shirwa Vailaya’s near Kumta. I do not know where is the fifth family is. If some one can contribute further on Vailaya Family, I would be grateful.
My Name is S Ganesan
Gotra – Angirasa

Kuladevaru – Shri Raktheswari / Mattu Vishnu Moorthy

🙂 this was wonderful to read. Dr.Nagendra Rao of Goa University has done his PhD. on this Shivalli Brahmana Naamavali. But could you clarify.. My Hande grandparents told me that Hande-Herale–Baasari–Holla –Thunga were not shivalli but Kota brahmins. The book on tulu history talks of Kandavara-Koteshwara-Kota and Shivalli Brahmins. Another thing is in your lineage I find our family name dropped out that is the Perampalli Neckhar’s.. (Nekkara)
the Kinni family of Aroor and the Chakkera or Chakkerbetta are all missing.
I think the Perampalli Nekkar’s and Aroor Kinni’s have definitely contributed to the shivalli community enough to be acknowledged.
I came across this site accidently. As my father was in the army, we did not have much connection with our roots in South Kanara. My great grandfather had bought some land near MUNDKUR and we descendants have continued to keep the surname as Udupa or Mundkur. Recently we came to know our kuladevatha is Lord Subramanya Kandavar near Kundapur. Are we Kota Brahmins or Shivalli? Gotta is Vishwamithra pravar is Dhananjaya. We worship Durga also. I’m married into a family with surname as Bhat. The gotta and pravara is same .The family mutt is Puthige mutt . My husband’s ancestors lived near Durga temple near BELMAN. Their kuladevatha is also lord Subramanya at Kandavar. I would like to know original family names.
Sumana Bhat most likely you will be kandavara brahmins and not shivalli. if you want to know more, you can probably check it up with Dr.Nagendra Rao at goa university, I shall see if I can get you his email ID

Excellent compilation. Do add ‘Hanjar’ surname into the shivalli family. Also, it would be of help if anyone here knows more about this surname. Trying to figure out our kula devi. Details : Kashyapa gotra. Shivalli brahmins
Ms. Radhika, if the surname Hanjar belongs to Kashyapa Gothra, then the Kuladevaru is Shri Adhijanardhana of Shemanthur village, who is the Kuladevaru for all Shivalli Brahmins of Kashyapa Gothra.
