Udupi Madhwa Brahmana Sabha, Kerala

It was in 1976, the “UDUPI MADHWA BRAHMANA SABHA” (Formerly “ALL KERALA TULU BRAHMINS’ FEDERATION”) came into existence at Tripunithura. The Central Organisation was inaugurated and blessed by H.H. Shri Viswesa Theertha Swamiji of Udupi Pejawar Mutt in 1976 and the First President was its Founding Father, late Shri K. Bhima Bhattar. He was later elevated to the position of Chief Patron of the Sabha, by Poojya Pejawar Mutt Swamiji.

The Central Organization, AKTBF commenced its activities with only 3 branches or Units in the first instance, but later on developed itself with 13 Units in Kerala and Tamilnadu along with their Sub-Units in various places, with a membership of nearly 3 lakhs. This organization has been extending its welfare activities to its members and their family on almost all important fields. Some are furnished below:

  1. Monthly pension to aged, helpless and unsupported members.
  2. Scholarships for higher education to children of members, who are economically backward.
  3. Financial assistance to the marriages of daughters of the members who are economically weak and helpless.
  4. Old-age pension to helpless artists of our community.
  5. Financial one-time assistance to patients, who are suffering from serious illness.
  6. “Veda Mantra Sikshana Sibirams” to preserve our culture and heredity.
  7. Awards to Units and members for their service to the welfare of their members and family.

Some of the programmes under proposal of the Central Organisation are furnished below:-

  1. Office Building and Temple Complex in the land purchased by the Centre at Tripunithura.
  2. “Veda Vidya Peetom” patronised by H.H. Shri Viswesa Theertha Swamiji of Udupi Pejawar Mutt at the land at Tripunithura purchased for the purpose.
  3. A Cultural Museum and Heritage Library.
  4. Educational Institutions for Higher Modern Technological Education.
  5. A Community Hall and Old Age Home.
  6. Small Scale Industrial Units to women of our community.

The Udupi Madhwa Brahmana Sabha has also decided to approach the State and Central Governments to redress their long-standing grievances on a priority basis. Some of the resolutions passed in the Annual General Body meeting held on 16-11-2003 at Kochi are given below:-

  1. The Central Organization will constitute a Separate Wing to take up the issue of Santhikars who are membership of our community to redress their grievances in service conditions.
  2. Nearly 3 lakh Tulu speaking members of our community are living in Kerala. But the Government of Kerala inspite of promises, has not recognised them as a Linguistic minority and grant them seperate quota in Education and Employment.
  3. Sealing them as “Upperclass”, the Udupi Brahmins are denied with reservation in education, employment and other fields. This should be rectified immediately by way of amending the existing reservation system.
  4. Government of India should include Tulu Language in the 14th Chapter.

    I am Ganesan and my gotharam is Vishwamithra gothram. My fathers’ name is Krishnan and has one elder brother and one younger sister. My grand fathers’ name is Vishnu and he was working as Revenue Inspector in Udupi, Murudeshwar and Sirsi. My grand mothers’ name is Kalyani. Both of them are no more. My grand father died around 1936-37.

    I want to know about the relatives on my grand fathers’ side (may be in Karnataka (or) in Kerala) in order to find out my “KULA THEVARU” and the place where the temple is situated?
    I hope you will help me in this matter.

  4. we are from cochin, tripunithura, in deep sorrowful mind informed in tripunithura we are divided in to 2. both the divisions have their own tulu temples (raghaverndra madam for one party and embramadam for another). both the groups quarelling each other, one group will not go to another groups temple, they will not attend the functions conducted by another group . so there is no body to guide and support in this occasion. Some one from our ashtamath or from tulu brahmana managing committee of bangalore/mangalore should take strict decision to merge both the groups. Whats happening now, in tripunithura our new gerneration are not aware of our customs and pooja things. They only know to quarel each other. Due to this its very sorry to tell you in the last year from our tulu brahmin family more than 15 youngsters choose other religion. In my opinion this is happened they not aware of our customs,because nobody to guide them. Their parents are busy fighting each other and not intersted in pooja and other things. In tripunithura more than 400 tulu brahmin families, out of this how many families giving value for our customs and how many families knows pooja things . Our top level ignored this mail, definitely within next 20 years there will not be any tulu brahmin family in tripunithura.

Brahmins must settle from Udupi and from other areas to Kerala.especially places like Kochi.a lot of prosperity happens here.but majority of our people are constricted to thiruvananthapuram district.here in kochi and near by areas ,konkanis(GSBs) are dominating more.I am sad that our members less in numbers.How I wish our members and families should come and settle in Kochi area.it will give us a new energy.here ,we are considered as inferior by Namboodiri brahmins calling us embrans.these all will change if more of our members settle in Kochi.

We have two organisations even in a small village town Tripunithura (kerala).As the town name goes, one shall have not two but three temples,large number of presidents for dwaitha.Train purohiths,accept trainers,follow what acharya no.1 has told.     welfare of Udupi Madhwa Thulu Brahmins. Eventhough it is not functiong, subsequently
    in the name of Kanyakumari District Madhwa Samajam, Suchindrum was established in
    the year 1996 founded by L.Padmanabhan Potti, Suchindrum was first Secretary and President was L.Chandrasekaran,Nagercoil for the welfare of Thulu Brahmins.Now this
    K.D.M.S has completed 15 years sucessfully. In the year 1997 this Association was
    Affiliated with the Udupi Madhwa Brahmana Sabha (Kerala),Ernakulam. All benefits are
    getting from the UMBS(K) for the Students in Kanyakumari District.

    As everybody says we are less in number, and that small in no., cannot do anything in the state of kerala either to merge with others or to fight against discrimination for our community by the state government. We were all migrated to this small state 2 generations back looking for a job as priest or as an Atluthakkulu. Now if you check in any of our units, it is very difficiult to find any of us due to other locals joining in the temple as priests and hotels. Local government supports other castes for doing preist job evenif they do not any of sansakrit.

    I would request you to make a memorandum to the CM of kerala for a reservation policy for TULU Brahmins for thier education, job, Pension for unemployed and many other things which are enjoying by others. We are all in the BPL category but hang around the superior class; so we are not eligible to get a job. This must be stopped. Please discuss in your in the next annual meeting for this INDSCRIMINATION being an INDIAN enabling us to gather infront of the secretariate as everybody does for a protest. As olden lines say…crying babies only will get milk or something others will die without achieiving intheir life.

  17. Sir, My son Mr. Sohan Puninchitaya Kudlu is studying in III Semester BE at NIE, Mysore and he has got 85% Marks in II PU studied at st. Alosius Pre University College, Mangalore and also 1 to 2 std at Kasaragod. after wards we migrated to Mangalore and study continued at Mangalore. Now I request you to why can’t support a small fellowship for his higher study. Annually Fee Rs.43000.00, Hostel Fee at Madhwa Hostel at Mysore Rs.18000.00 books, stationary laboraty equipment arount Rs.10000.00 total comes at arond Rs.70000.00 per year, and my second son studying at St Aloysius Pre University College in I PU his fee around Rs.27000/- books stationary dress etc. Rs.7000 total comes Rs.34000.00 He is aso scored 83% in SSLC. Hence my humble request sanction an amount of Rs.3000.00 per month as fellowship for his higher education. thaning you awaiting your favourable reply

  20. AFAIK, Shivalli and GSB are two sects of brahmana jaati. There should be no problem for inter-sect marriage. Whether they are Maadhwas or Advaitins is secondary.
